A Look Back| January 2018

rld1.png

I can’t believe I’m already writing a post on the last month!  2017 went by so fast!

Heifer- Cows who haven’t had calves yet, or are having their first calf.

Cow- A cow who has already had a calf.

Sorting heavies- Sorting out the cows who look like they are going to calve very soon, from the cows who look like they won’t calve for a little while longer.

Sorting pairs- Taking the cows that have already calved, along with their calves, and putting them in another field besides the calving pasture.

What has happened so far in the year of 2018 for us?

  • We skied every Thursday of January at a nearby ski hill.
  • The heifers started calving and were pretty close to being finished by the end of the month.
  • Grandpa, dad, and Colton sorted out the heavies from the rest of the cows.

And a sneak peek into February…

  • Colton started night calving the 2nd.

So, calving season is upon us.  The heifers just have a few left, and the cows will really start gearing up and calving the 5th of February.

That means Grandpa will be spending most of his days in the calving pasture watching cows and tagging, Colton will be spending his nights’ calving, and dad will be sorting heavies, and soon be riding through the calves every day.  We will also be spending quite a few afternoons sorting out pairs in the calving pasture.

Life is never boring around here unless you let it be. 🙂

Happy February everybody!

So true. I have to agree that our life will be only be a picture of the things we have allowed to be in our lives. =) Nice update. Would love to visit ranches one day. =)
